WELCOME TO MY ECOPPORTUNITYX SHRINE (-:
ecopportunityx is an interactive webcomic written by bwooom, that ran from february 2nd 2022 to december 25th 2023.
ecopportunityx focuses on the titular facility, and the child living within it in the aftermath of a disaster. the comic tells the story of their attempts at exploration of, and eventually, escape from, the building that has been their home their whole life.
this is where i'll stop, at least outside of spoiler tags - because despite being completed and no longer interactive, ecopportunityx is so unbelievably worth your time. from the striking aesthetic to the style of humour to its surprisingly genuine emotional beats, i cannot recommend this funny little webcomic enough. please, do yourself a favour and go read it.
now, for the spoilery stuff:
oh my goodness. ohhh my goodness this comic. so, first, lemme talk about each of the characters in turn, and what i like about them.Kid!
kiiidd...my sweetie pie. genuinely such a fun 'player character'. their circumstances line up exactly with why we as the audience would be able to control them (of course them being linked to hp, a being from a higher place, would tune them into us a bit!) and it works beautifully. my favourite thing about kid, though, is the fact that their own character traits manage to shine through despite essentially being a mouthpiece for the audience; this is done really well through setpieces and the way their interactions with other characters are described. in short: the funny fish.
Ashley
i love ashley, because when it comes down to it, he is just some fucking guy. he has...shockingly little going on compared to the rest of the cast, i feel - even chantal, who's most similar to ashley on paper, has her familial connections - ashley is just...there. which is why i am very glad he's the first person that kid meets, besides zeller, of course.
ashley, the poor bastard, is shoved into this situation without any warning, after having just watched his coworkers die and having survived as a result of his own cowardice - and he fucking goes with it. he's not the stepmom hes the mom that stepped up. as soon as he realises kid is a child, he immediately becomes concerned with their safety. there is no one else there for this poor kid, so ashley has to do...something. and do something he very much does. and god the way that it softens them, not just around kid but in terms of his interactions with others...yea. good character.
he's. my booboo. we love ashley in this house.
Chantal :D
CHANTAL!!!!! my favourite thing about chantal is not particularly what she says, or does, but what she doesn't say. that's not all she has going for her of course - she has some of the funniest lines in the comic and the way her speech and actions are written stands out as particularly charming. but like i said - chantal really shines when we're given context clues, or she's cut-off mid sentence - or when hp blabs against her will. chantal has a lot hidden beneath that smiley surface, and you really pick up on the sense that she's a human dam about to burst at any minute. which, depending on the context, is either hysterical, ("“But I already spent hours curled up under my desk having an episode, and that didn’t get me anywhere.” She places a hand on Ashley’s shoulder. “And if I end up like that again, I’m not getting back up.”") or gut-wrenching ("Haha, hell? What were you thinking! Being negative like that is only going to make you feel wor--feel bad.").
